Free Silent Comedy Ezine - The Lost Laugh

Post by Matthew Ross » Sat Dec 12, 2020 2:08 am

Hi folks!

I’m a newbie who’s been lurking for a while… I’ve been enjoying reading along and learning from you all!

Just thought that some of you silent comedy fans may be interested in my e-zine and blog, The Lost Laugh, if you’ve not come across it before. (I’m not generally very good at sharing and promoting it..). The e-zine covers silent and early sound comedy as well as dipping into music hall and variety.

Each issue has in-depth articles, film reviews, articles by guest writers, rare photos and reproduced vintage articles from the trades. As a example, the last issue featured an article on British silent comedian Walter Forde (including quite a bit of film and biographical information that I don’t think has been published before), Monty Banks in the sound era, Baby Peggy, a Q & A with Ben Model, Mabel Normand’s last film, and the overlooked shorts Roscoe Arbuckle made while Buster Keaton was in the army.

There are 12 back issues with a lucky 13th due in the New Year. You can download them for free (as PDFs) here:
https://thelostlaugh.com/magazine/

The website has a blog and I'm also building a series of pages with focus on different forgotten comics. Wallace Lupino is the latest addition!

Anyway, thanks for reading this far and I hope you'll take a look! :) I always love to feature guest contributions and to help share and promote projects that people are working on, so do get in touch if you’d like to be involved.

Best,

Matt

Matthew,

This is the first I've heard about your blog and magazine, but that's my shortcoming, not yours. I was duly impressed with every aspect of your blog and the issues of your magazine have a real energy to them. There's a strong sense of discovery that runs throughout your work that can be summed up as if you are saying, "Hey, you just gotta see this!" Congratulations. Anybody can copy and paste images and add some text but you have developed an approach to the material that conveys a sense of excitement.

Let me invite you to post your work on my Facebook group, Silent Films Today. I started it in 2013 and today it has 3.4K members. The group is private but I promise to admit you if you ask to join. Thanks.

Bob,

Thanks so much for your kind words about 'The Lost Laugh'. Much appreciated. It's a labour of love, so I'm really glad the enthusiasm comes through! :D

Thanks also for the offer of joining your Facebook group. I don't actually use Facebook, but if I do start I would love to join.

Thanks again,

Matt
