TCM New Website Functiionality

Post by Trueblood » Tue Dec 15, 2020 12:59 pm

Forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask this question. I know there have been many posts, pro and mostly con, about the redo of the TCM website. Two questions just occurred to me.

1. Has TCM entirely dumped the feature to provide email alerts about upcoming films? As many of you know, one used to be able to request such an email notification so as not to miss an upcoming showing. I see no feature like that any longer. I used to use that all the time as I went through the upcoming monthly schedule. This became a habit after the demise of the printed NOW PLAYING magazine.

2. More serious is the apparent absence of information about an upcoming showing of a film after entering a search for it. I looked through the December, 2020, online schedule for the month and noted a few titles being shown later. When I searched for those titles in the general search box, the resulting hits include no information that the titles will be shown soon.

I checked these two issues on the TCM message boards but found very little information. One person there asked the question no. 1 above but there was no answer. I tried the TCM website on Firefox, MS Edge and IE. Same problems on all three. I'd appreciate any info anyone has.

Thanks so much,

David

If I go the the TCM daily schedule page now (Tuesday, Dec. 15.) at
https://www.tcm.com/schedule/?ecid=subn ... cmschedule

and type "Harry" in the search box at the top (to the right of "Daily Schedule"), it finds:
- "The Trouble with Harry" Thursday, December 17 12:45 AM
- "The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry" Sunday, January 3 12:00 and 10:00 AM.

That is true. Thanks. What's not really clear is how one is supposed to search for something in the future...perhaps months away. The only "search" box at the top right of the home page says "SHOP" next to it. If you search this box for a title, it gives info on that title but nothing about when it might air in the future. The old website seemed to find airings months away with the basic search. Then you could ask for an email reminder. It would help if the SCHEDULE drop-down box had a third choice: DAILY SCHEDULE, MONTH SCHEDULE and something like "SEARCH SCHEDULE." This also doesn't answer what happened to the email reminder function. I am sure I'm not the only one who used that feature.

And, wow, i just just found Battle of the Century. Just when reel 2 is starting, drat. I had searched the schedule to see if they were showing it and found nothing. Then i was on the phone with my mother who had watched Peyton Place and said it was followed by a silent film with narration starring a cross eyed guy, and while looking for that i noticed that my view of today on the monthly schedule jumped from 3 in the afternoon till 3 in the morning. I tried the daily schedule and found it said Battle of the Century was now playing but there were still no films listed on either side of it. I started trying to record it and says that TCM is showing To Be Announced for hours.

So this new functionality is really leaving a lot to be desired. Hope Battle of the Century will be on the app, i still haven't seen the first reel!

The far-future TCM scheduling is not very stable in the first place, so I personally do not bother looking that far ahead. If it is subject to change, why waste the time? I did try a few searches for random words and received results in February, though. So the search covers at least a couple months.

Most of the Laurel and Hardy movies are made available online on the watch TCM page. "Battle of the Century" will probably appear there later tonight.

I only found out about Battle of the Century in time because I belong to Sons of the Desert & our Grand Sheik put out a last minute e-mail alert.Had I not been checking my e-mails about another matter at the time, I would have missed it

Thanks to Sheik Bill, I was warned in time.

And yes, the functionality of the new website schedule is garbage. I had a shortcut on my phone to the weekly schedule because I referenced it often. The new schedule site is useless.

Wow, that is frustrating. I've been checking TCM for days on my Tivo, including today, and there was no listing for Battle of the Century. I hope it does end up on the app but it's not there as of now. :(

I was initially surprised/upset that BotC was NOT part of this month's L&H tribute on TCM. Luckily, I was scrolling through the on-screen TCM listing to choose what to DVR and saw last night blocked out with TBA and, impulsively, marked it for recording.

SO glad I did as BotC was the lead-off film for the LoC event.

That said, I must assume that TCM was aware of this year's list well in advance - i.e., while they were programming this month's L&H tribute, and chose to save its premiere for prime time. The problem with that, as others here experienced, is if you weren't aware a) of yesterday's announcement of this year's LoC slate and b) aware that TCM would run several of this year's selectees last night, you're OOL.

That said, I'm sure TCM will run BotC again. (Hell, they're running my favorite L&H, BIG BUSINESS, twice this month.)

"Battle of the Century" was listed on TCM's daily schedule page yesterday. Also on MovieCollectorOH's new schedule, which mostly duplicates TCM's schedule.
