German silent DER KAMPF UMS MATTERHORN streaming

Post by Arndt » Sat May 29, 2021 2:08 am

This time it is not the Filmmuseum München but the DFF – Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum - in Frankfurt that are streaming a classic. DER KAMPF UMS MATTERHORN is one of the highlights of the popular German genre of Bergfilme (mountain films), this time not directed by but with cooperation from Arnold Fanck and shot by his cameraman Sepp Allgeier. It stars Luis Trenker (of KAISER VON KALIFORNIEN fame) and has been recently restored. It comes with electronic accompaniment that will not be to everyone's liking.
You can find the stream here but only for a few days, so do not dilly-dally!

The streaming forms part of the initiative of European film archives that is also behind the Czech classics online. You can find the website here:

Yes...and with so few titles (all with English subs), it's an amazing film to watch, if a little too long for most people's liking. This film shows how quickly joy can turn into anger and mistrust.
I first saw "White Hell of Pitz Palu" (1929) (even longer at 135 minutes) and was impressed with it's image quality. This one's at least as good. Arnold Franck certainly mastered the mountains in these films.

Thanks for posting the link. While I was not fond of the score, I find that turning the volume down on scores I don't like, so as not to overwhelm the film, usually works for me. I worked in this case. I even sent my son-in-law the link and he enjoyed it.

Many thanks Arndt, from me as well for the link to this film. I enjoyed it very much. Luis Trenker is one of my favourite Actors. Recently I watched the Blu-ray for the Kaiser From Kalifornia, it's just as good treat!

Let me add my thanks as well. This was my introduction to Clifford McLaughlin.

Actually, I found the electronic score worked for the domestic/psychological portions of the film, but not for the action/climbing sections which comprised most of the film.
