RAMSBOTTOM RIDES AGAIN (1956)

Post by earlytalkiebuffRob » Mon Jun 21, 2021 6:30 am

Is there a decent copy of this film out there? I remember it being scheduled by the BBC in the 1970s (missed it) as well as being missing from the John Baxter season at London's NFT. All the copies on YouTube look dreadful, as if taped a very long time ago and suspect the same goes for the DVDs out there...

The only copy I've ever seen looks like it was recorded with a hand-held camera from a wonky TV set.

That good? One wonders if the late Bob Monkhouse taped it at the time...

On a slightly different note...

I've had a bit of an interest in John Baxter for a bit, having seen a few of his films, and been charmed by them. This thread led me to his IMDB listing again. Go look at that picture there. Baxter lived from 1896 - 1975. There's not one chance in a thousand that that's him.

This time I'm not even going to try correcting it... You think any of those idiots have any sense of when this picture has to be from? If that's a man born in 1896, then I really am Bud Abbott.

Nope, it's not worth the annoyance.

Thank you. I should, of course have consulted my catalogue of Viewing Copies or the BFI Online Catalogue, although it is often difficult to find out information about film condition, as it is one thing having a copy, and another having a copy in viewable condition, not to mention issues of copyright... At least it sounds promising...

I had a similar experience with Wikipedia with a photo which was clearly incorrect even if one knew nothing about the person apart from his birth and death dates. Another reason why one should always cite information sources in case they're unreliable...

I had a similar thing happen a few years ago with a picture they'd had for the director David Miller which was clearly not him. Eventually they corrected it, but not before refusing to for a while.

I refuse to update glaring Wikipedia facts anymore and not for a long time. I don't need to receive instant threats of banning and defacing their site.
IMDB I even longer than that stopped after I presented corrections for some German wartime films I had studio records of. The errors were not acknowledged and they remained.

Might depend upon if the films were actually accessible for checking. Usually I have made corrections and amendments only if a copy of the film is available for verification.

On the case of Wikipedia I had a legitimate Network UK disc in my hands when I tried to make the amendment.
