The Bitter Stems and The Beast Must Die
Fresh on the heels of its exceptionally well received TCM premiere, The Bitter Stems (Los Tallos Amargos, 1956) will be co-published with The Beast Must Die (La Bestia Debe Morir, 1952) in a highly anticipated Blu-ray/DVD dual format release featuring pressed media, from Flicker Alley.

The Bitter Stems (Los Tallos Amargos), a rarely seen 1956 film, was lauded in its day but only recently rediscovered, hidden away in a private collector’s home outside Buenos Aires. Thanks to the diligent efforts of the Film Noir Foundation and Argentine cinephile Fernando Martín Peña, a gorgeous new print of The Bitter Stems was created, by the UCLA Film & Television Archive, from the reconditioned original negative, now presented in its first ever home video release–with special thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Charitable Trust.


The Beast Must Die (La Bestia Debe Morir), director Román Viñoly Barreto’s compelling 1952 thriller, a long-lost treasure of Argentine noir rediscovered, arrives thanks to the efforts of the Film Noir Foundation and UCLA Film & Television Archive, rescued and restored to its original brilliance.

Both of these are great films. The Bitter Stems first played at the festival several years ago and THE BEAST MUST DIE showed at the 2018 Festival in LA. Both feature good acting, lovely production design, and lighting.

Looks as if THE BEAST MUST DIE is an early version of Nicholas Blake's (aka C Day-Lewis) novel of the same name, filmed by Chabrol in the late 60s. Hope they paid for the rights...

Neither one of these films are rediscoveries, specially for me because I grew up watching them constantly on television, although Fernando's prints are probably the best one available.

In fact, both films have been on YouTube for years with no fears of somebody taken them down since they are in the public domain.
