Another familiar BFI name from the 1960s and 70s onward, with perhaps his best-known book being Studies in Documentary (1972), co-written with Jim Hillier, in which he wrote the sections on John Grierson and 'Free Cinema'. Other books include works on Don Siegel and Anarchist Cinema. He wrote lucidly and informatively, eschewing jargon and the polysyllables which were a frequent part of critical writing from the 1960s onwards which meant that one didn't need a dictionary to hand whilst reading him....
