I've just been watching some of the genre films he made with Philippe DeBroca, where he's noted for his daring stunt work. It's funny that he's mainly known here for art films.

Who is left from the French New Wave, then? Jean-Luc Godard, of course - and ...

Alain Delon for one. Maybe J-L G could do a big-screen version of Last of the Summer Wine... And of course La Bardot, Jean-Pierre Leaud...

A heavy loss that truly hurts. His sensitive subtlety in De Sica's TWO WOMEN is powerful enough to affect you when you learn what happened to him later, but then he could be suave, a swashbuckling action star, mysterious, cunning, romantic, and touching with pathos. His filmography is so worthwhile too – just about everything in the 1960s is either good or great, and Kino has recently started recently many of his films. He had a cinematic smile like no other.

Tonight is set aside for the PIERROT LE FOU, a personal favorite. They don't make them like they used to (sorry, Chalamet). I suppose part of the reason is the writers and filmmakers aren't quite what they used to be. The industry has changed a great deal. For every Portrait de la jeune fille en feu, there's a hundred throwaways it seems. Anyway, here's a nugget I thought you might all enjoy...

The Criterion Channel has added a new "Now Playing" selection of seven Belmondo films.

Criterion has a series of his films, but I just reviewed some different ones.

The most interesting role of his that I can think of is in "Leon Morin, Priest".

Here is a more complete recording of the orchestra playing Ennio Morricone's music and the end of the homage.
