Western film legend Harry "Dobe" Carey Jr., his wife Marilyn and other members of the famous Carey family are guests of honor at a country-style picnic potluck luncheon at Tesoro Adobe Historic Park in Valencia on Saturday, May 30, starting at 1 p.m.

"We're calling it 'The Return of the Careys,'" said Albert L. Ewing, recreation services leader for William S. Hart Park and coordinator of the event, which is free to the public.

Now a Los Angeles County park, Tesoro Adobe is on the site of the 1,000-acre ranch once owned by the Careys.

Noted western film actor Harry Carey, credited with at least 233 movies, built the ranch in the 1920s and 1930s. Icons of western films including John Wayne, William S. Hart and Gary Cooper visited Tesoro Adobe.

Carey's son, known to many by his nickname, "Dobe," was born on the ranch May 16, 1921. His mother Olive Carey was also a western film actor.

Dobe got into the family business after serving in the Navy and the O.S.S. during World War II. His early film credits include "Rolling Home" (1946), "Pursued" (1947), "Red River" (1948) and "The Searchers" (1956); the latter two starred John Wayne, with John Ford directing.

Other classics Dobe made with Wayne included "Island in the Sky" (1953), "Gun the Man Down" (1956), "Escort West" (1958), "Rio Bravo" (1959), "The Undefeated" (1969), "Big Jake" (1971), and "Cahill, U.S. Marshal" (1973).

Dobe was also a star on the small screen, and a regular in "The Adventures of Spin & Marty" on the original "Mickey Mouse Club" during the mid-1950s.

According to the International Movie Database, Dobe appeared in almost 100 movies and 100 television programs.

His wife Marilyn is daughter of character actor Paul Fix, also Dobe's godfather.

Harry Carey Sr. was honored with a star on the Walk of Western Stars in Newhall in 1987. Dobe received a star in April 2005.

That June, the county accepted the donation of Tesoro Adobe Historic Park from Montalvo Properties LLC, developer of the Tesoro residential community that surrounds the park.

Oh wow! I'd love to be there to see Dobe. Oh well, I will just have to add Tesoro Adobe Park to the long list of places I want to visit if I ever get to California.
