2010 Silent Film Benefit Calendar now shipping!

Post by Rodney » Fri Nov 13, 2009 5:13 pm

The 2010 Silent Film Benefit Calendar is now available! I produce this calendar every year with generous contributions of photographs from silent film fans, as a benefit to silent film preservation.

Image

The Silent Movies Benefit Calendar features silent film artwork and birthdays of silent-era film stars and personalities, as well as notable marriages, deaths, film openings, and other significant dates. The artwork ranges from promotional stills for major Hollywood releases to rare star mug shots and informal pictures of stars from Colleen Moore to Gary Cooper.

The cost of the calendar is $15 for the first calendar to a particular address, plus $12 for any additional calendars going to the same address, plus postage.

For information on ordering the calendar, and some images of pages from the calendar, visit this web site:

Rodney,

:? Say, do you still accept Paypal? I don't see that listed here? I used Paypal last year so I know it had been there before. I won't use anything other than Paypal On-line.

Anxiously awaiting mine! Thanks Rodney for doing this every year, it's always a great pleasure to flip month to month. Brightens my dreary deskscape a good deal.

Paypal is fine. Google Checkout takes a slightly smaller fee (originally it had NO fee, which is even nicer, of course), so more money goes to film preservation, but go ahead and send your Paypal payment (same as on the Google Checkout pop-up menu) to me at rodney (at) mont-alto (d0t) com. Don't forget the hyphen in mont-alto.

For one calendar and postage, that's $17.49.

Thanks for all of you for supporting this project! The first batch should be arriving in your mailboxes today or tomorrow.

How much do I pay for shipping to Germany?

Rodney, Graceann was asking the same about mailing to the UK. Does google checkout give you an option for overseas postage? A second buy it button?

In theory I could do a second button -- but what I found last year was that not all countries were the same price (not even all European countries, for that matter). So inquiring about postage and then sending Paypal seems best. For what it's worth, Germany, the Netherlands, France, and the U.K. are all $6.28 for one calendar at the moment, using International First Class. There's also a Global Priority Mail at $12.95, which may be an advantage if you're ordering three or more calendars.

And Google Checkout was originally limited to U.S. and Canada, so I'd have to look to see if that's changed.

Since postage to all European countries (and the U.K.) seems to be the same this year, I've added a Google Checkout option with that postage. I, of course, haven't actually tried it out yet to see if it works, so please report back if you try and it turns out it doesn't work from abroad... I can always work through Paypal or good old U.S. dollars (how 'bout that exchange rate!)

Rodney, the calendar arrived and is, gorgeous as usual. Thanks to everyone who contributed the terrific photos!

I gotta say, that set for the December photo is pretty lush for a Keystone!

I particularly like the cobra chandelier. That got my attention right off.

From what I've read, (a) this is the last comedy made by the Keystone Studio, and (b) it's a pretty lousy film. But -- what a great set!

The plot appears to be the same as that of Harold Lloyd's A Sailor-Made Man, but it's the details that make or break a film like this. And I don't remember Lloyd getting in drag.

Nope. Just pictures I liked, that people were able to send to me. A good distribution of people you've heard of and people you probably haven't. There are more pictures with child actors than usual, I suppose, but that's just a random fluctuation.

Next year I plan to do a bathing suit issue, and I'm collecting some juicy photos for that.

oh.... the blurb about Moore could have mentioned her autobiography, Silent Star as an interesting read. I hope more of her films are restored/released.... she's great!

I've had a couple of questions about whether I've got calendars left -- yes, I do! I guarantee to send out any orders I receive before January 1 (and I'll do a second printing if needed). After that, I'll continue to fulfill any orders until they're gone. I usually sell the remainders off (if any) at the Kansas Silent Film Festival, so that's your last-possible chance.

Your purchases so far have more than covered the printing costs, so I'm accumulating money towards the cause with every sale.

And I do have a few copies of previous year's calendars (depending on the year) if you want to live in the past, or just to have the photos. Send me an email and I'll tell you what I've got.
