"Golden Dawn" & other early musicals from Warn

Post by Decotodd » Wed Dec 02, 2009 4:09 pm

Cross-posted from the silent threads, but know that "Golden Dawn" has many "admirers" in the forum and it is one of a a number of early musical (1929/1930) Warner Archive releases yesterday.

In addition, Susan King has an article about these releases in today's LA Times.

Should we all chip in and buy a copy for Miss Merrivale?

Nice to see the early talkie musicals that were recently released. I always felt that RIO RITA would have been an excellent choice when MGM/UA released their DAWN OF SOUND sets on LD years ago. Does anyone know if "Sailin' On A Sunbeam" has be reinstated into IT'S A GREAT LIFE? Whenever TCM ran it the number was missing. Yet they would show the number as a One Reel Wonder or From The Vaults installment.

The last time I definitely remember seeing It's a Great Life on TCM was July or August 1997, and I'm pretty sure "Sailing on a Sunbeam" wasn't there. In October of that year, Nick Langdon wrote on AMS: "We were able to see [at UCLA] a pristine 35mm reel of the previously missing "Sailing On A Sunbeam" number from IT'S A GREAT LIFE as well as most of FOLLOW THRU. By the way, the Sunbeam number is almost completely restored now and should be sent to TCM to be added back to the TV print soon. So the next time that film is aired you should tape it because you WON'T want to miss THAT number."

Anyone know if it's been aired since?

I'm certain that my copy was from a later broadcast (although I couldn't say exactly when) and the number was still missing.

I believe TCM has shown it as a stand-alone between programming. Hopefully the DVD from Warners will have it. If not (or if you want to watch it before your copy arrives) you can find it on Youtube.

I have to admit that I am a Golden Dawn vestal virgin, but my dvd just came in the mail! Now, do I have Amy watch it with me and will the marriage be over?

Dennis,
All will be ok if viewed with a perverse sense of humor, and a forgiving attitude.

A modest amount of alcohol and/or weed may also help.

Modesty and Golden Dawn can not coexist. Go for the gusto or don't go there at all.
