Silent film journals online
A terrific collection of images, but these are cinema programmes rather than journals, yes? I've kept the Bioscope listing to film journals only, but will have to write something separate on this collection (trusting Google Translate to come to my rescue).

Hi Luke,
I don't know much about these books, since they are not in our collection. However, there is a detailed introduction
http://www.kb.nl/bladerboek/asta/introductie.html
and I'd be happy to read your google translation first at least to take out the evident translation mistakes. Otherwise I can also put you into contact with the Royal Library staff.

Bruce Long,
Wow! Wonderful stuff. I'm enjoying the 2nd issue posted of Picture Play from this batch right now. Terrific article on Betty Compson. And hey, Mary Pickford's eyes were Hazel, not Blue? They were? Thanks again!

This is a great trend that I hope will continue. Now if we can find someone to tackle the German film magazines (such as DIE FILMWOCHE), that would be a valuable contribution, too.

Re: Silent film journals online
And there's more. Germany is indeed poorly represented so far, and the UK not much better, but David Pierce has recently uploaded Nov 1904-Oct 1905 of British trade journal The Optical Lantern and Cinematograph Journal (precursor of the Kinematograph Weekly). All word-searchable and filled with such treasures (if 1904-05 cinema happens to be your thing).

I'm pleased to be able to report one German silent film era journal online at least. There are four volumes of Bild und Film for the period 1912-15 available online from the Bibliothek für Bildungsgeschichtliche Forschung, link here:This is a great trend that I hope will continue. They only provide GIF images, and no word searching (and no English), but there are links with descriptions to individual pages, which helps.

Great job in tracking this down! It looks like a valuable resource for research into the Wilhelmine-era German film industry, which is only beginning to become a subject of study in its own right.urbanora wrote: I'm pleased to be able to report one German silent film era journal online at least. Re: Silent film journals online
Happily, I have another digitised silent film journal to report. The University of Zurich has digitised the Swiss German-language film trade journal Kinema for the years 1913-1919. It's easy to search and browse, individual pages or whole issues can be downloaded as PDFs, and from the PDFs you can capture text to put into Google Translate if you are monolingual like me. It covers a whole lot more than just Swiss cinema, and has many evocative and interesting advertisements.
The site is here: http://www.film.uzh.ch/kinema/" target="_blank (click on "Blättern" to go to the database itself)
My Bioscope report on the journal is here: http://bioscopic.wordpress.com/2011/08/ ... ma-online/" target="_blank
Well worth exploring.

Re: Silent film journals online
I've been trying to keep up with all the new silent film era journals being added online by listing them on The Bioscope in one place: (http://thebioscope.net/library/journals/).
This list has got a bit unwieldy for one web page, specially for anyone wanting to look up the journals of just one country, so I've now produced a country by country menu option - on the website menu, go to Library, then go to Journals from the drop down list, and then a list of the countries will appear.
More information here: http://thebioscope.net/2012/04/26/silen ... ls-update/" target="_blank" target="_blank

Online archive of Box Office News 1925-2012 (a few years missing), including pre-1933 incarnations under various names.

Geared towards exhibitors rather than the cinema-going public, lots of fascinating stuff such as trade ads pertaining to the late-20s "sound panic".

I got in about 12 hours ago, but it would stall just before serving up any PDF pages, so I only saw thumbnails. The issue I first saw didn't look complete, either. I expect it's a work in progress.
Re: Silent film journals online
Works OK for me, at least those issues that I've tried out. The Reel Journal (one of the precursors of Box Office given on the site) is also available from The Internet Archive (http://archive.org/details/reeljournal1924reelrich" target="_blank).
I've added links to the extra The Reel Journal issues, Motion Pictures Times and and Movie Age on the Box Office site to the ever-growing list of silent film journals on The Bioscope, here: http://thebioscope.net/library/journals/" target="_blank
with links to the American journals accessible on their own here: http://thebioscope.net/library/journals/usa/" target="_blank

Re: Silent film journals online
It's working fine now, must have been an early teething problem.

Re: Silent film journals online
I recently scanned the microfilm of Photoplayers Weekly (1914-1916) and added it to the Internet Archive. The text is generally readable, but text search is not reliable; you could miss something useful if you don't browse. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lots were in magazine format; the 1st, 5th, and 6th were in newspaper format.

Thanks. I'm still waiting for more from the late silent and precode sound era. I get a sinking feeling it's going to be a long wait.Bruce Long wrote:I recently scanned the microfilm of Photoplayers Weekly (1914-1916) and added it to the Internet Archive. Re: Silent film journals online
Well, well! Usually when I complain nothing happens, but today I got an email that they've filled out many of the missing Photoplay months I was looking for. Only gaps in 1923 and 1933 are all that are left for my research. There are still gaps in 1939, 1936, 1920, and a few scattered months but it's a much more complete collection now.
