Howard Hawks address?

Post by studiobooks » Thu Jul 15, 2010 3:36 pm

I am trying to find out if Hawks had an office at 9441 Wilshire Boulevard at any time. Google tells me that this is a gorgeous 1929 Art Deco building, once the California Bank Building, now the Sterling Building. I tried an inquiry to the LA Public Library reference dept, but no reply. My small collection of Hawks bios yielded nothing on this particular address. Any help much appreciated.

This book, Howard Hawks: The Grey Fox of Hollywood, page 404; says that in mid-1945 he left offices at Warner Bros. and moved "into the H-F office at Famous Artists on Wilshire Boulevard."

It doesn't give the exact address, at least on that page. but maybe that can be found out with more digging.

Also there was a Hawks-Volck office at your address of 9441. In this case the Hawks was one of Howard's brothers, but I don't know his name; was it William? or was Ken a brother?

See page 8 of this:

Also see item 6 in this list of search results.

If you click on it you should download (or view) a PDF file listing the arrangement for actor Herbert Marshall to receive free cigarettes from a tobacco company. His agent is Hawks-Volck at the 9441 address.

Thanks very much, Rick- from your tips, I went on to confirm in other publications George Volck's relationship with William Hawks (Ken is the brother who died young in a plane crash), and Volck's longtime office at this address. Volck was a prominent agent (L. Gish, G. Sanders, G. Swanson, et al)- hadn't come across his name before, also didn't know that William Hawks was married to Bessie Love!

What doesn't yet seem clear is Howard's place in this office space- a complimentary office and phone because of his brother? Or something more formal? All I know is the beat-up book I have has Howard's ownership sticker with this address and a CRestview phone number (close, but different from Volck's). Probably not the obscure detail that would seem that important to many people.

What I find fun about researching Hollywood is what you discover when looking for something else. Also the additional questions that pop up in the meantime. Sure would make it easier to be in the LA area- checking old phone books, etc, is not so easy by internet. Thanks again, Stephen/ Studio Books
