I've had two bootleg vhs copies, acquired from different sources, but both obviously mastered from the same original. Poor quality.

Is that one of the films we saw at the San Francisco Cinecon in a gorgeous 35mm and possibly lightly-tinted nitrate? Or am I confusing it with a similarly-themed 1930s comedy? Maybe it was THE SMILING LIEUTENANT nitrate that had the light tints.

Chris,

I think you are remembering THIS IS THE NIGHT, which Jon and I ran at our 1984 Cinecon in SF. That was a nitrate print from UCLA, and it had some minor tinting throughout.

I recall the 35mm of NIGHT LIFE OF THE GODS was run at Rusty and Ted's Minneapolis Cinecon two or three years later. That print came from a private collector in Los Angeles.

Is TCM ever going to acquire 1930s Universal titles?

Supposedly they signed a contract last year, but I think it takes effect in 2011. Does anyone have more info on this?
