The Lady (1925)

Post by Danny » Fri Oct 01, 2010 8:40 am

I just watched a DVD, "WHY BE GOOD, SEXUALITY AND CENSORSHIP IN EARLY CINEMA". Much of it just covered everything we have already heard many times. But there was one clip that puzzled me. It was a Norma Talmadge film from 1925 called "THE LADY". It looked quite interesting. Now I can't seem to find info on it from Imdb or Silent Era. Can anyone clear this up? Does it exists?

Other great clips included were Colleen Moore "WHY BE GOOD". I forgot whether this is lost or not.

Odd. The IMDB page is here:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0016006/

and there has been discussion about it here and recently. Try using the Search function.

To synopsize what is known, it exists at the IMDB in a print donated by the Douris Corporation. They do make a version of it on computerized projection available. I think the story is ridiculous but Norma Talmadge is, as you might expect, excellent.

the IMDB?

I have a copy of this film, it's been floating around (yes it's incomplete and deteriorated) for a while.

Talmadge is excellent as "the lady."

THE LADY was screened at Cinefest a few years ago. It was a 35mm print - I'm pretty sure it was from Library of Congress. If I'm remembering correctly, at least one reel was missing (reel 2?) and there was a lot of decomp printed in, in other parts.

I'm sure there must be reports from Cinefest here talking about the film - probably 2007?

Oops - I applied my theory that if I think it was only two years ago, to add a year... But in this case, it was 2008.

Danny,

WHY BE GOOD? isn't lost, but it hasn't been preserved really either. That is it hasn't been transferred to Safety-film. It had been lost for many years, discovered in 2003. we are still waiting for Warner's to copy the from the existing nitrate that was found. The elements are stashed in some vault in Italy. At least they were the last I had heard earlier this year.
