Ransom Notes

The 1913 Fantomas film The Murderous Corpse includes what is now a well-worn plot device: a message composed of words cut out of newspapers or magazines, done to avoid revealing the handwriting style of the sender.

I wonder if this is the first filmed instance of this? I suppose that thriller writers have used such letters ever since printed material was widely available.

Not this exactly, but sorta.
