I think She Couldn't Help It is lost, but this is a nice photo of Bebe, which I have seen used to advertise other movies. From the 28-February-1921 Ogden Standard-Examiner.

Here is an example from the same theater the next year for Nancy From Nowhere:
http://cablecarguy.blogspot.com/2011/05 ... -2011.html" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank

Note the top part of that ad, where Larry Semon's name and photo are much larger than Gloria Swanson's. I have speculated that this may explain Larry's mysterious death ;0)

Any idea of the year of that Bebe Daniels letter or who the Ruby was to whom it was written?

A beautiful & charming series of posters of my favorite actress...until the moment my unwary eyes were assaulted by one loathesome contemporary photo inserted, I guess, to shock & sicken. I wish it could be expunged, though I'll cary that repugnant image in my head for the rest of the day.

Had assumed P.T. Barnum was long since deceased by the date of the above Rio Rita publicity release, yet can't imagine who else could have written it! Best of all, it's TRUE--every word! Except, copy seems to suggest Bebe appeared in stage production...a trifling exaggeration.

That is odd. Why list RIO RITA for Daniels? Like she had no previous film career? Odd also that THE DESERT SONG is listed for Boles? That film preceded RIO RITA?

Original production ran about 14 months and starred J. Harold Murray and Ethelind Terry, both of whom had minor film careers. The original cast list is huge with well over 50 names. RIO RITA has never been revived on Broadway.

50? Not bad for Broadway, but hardly worth mentioning compared to FIVE HUNDRED "singers, dancers, & glorified beauties" in this "colossal" Radio production!

So sad that the vast majority of her films are lost. She seemed like such a natural comedic charmer. She must have one of the lowest rates of surviving silents of a major star (particularly her 1920s output). At the very least, she deserves having SEÑORITA and FEEL MY PULSE get a release, and hopefully SHE'S A SHEIK if enough can be done with Brownlow's print to make it watchable in decent quality. Someone reach out to Kevin and let him know we would all love to see it happen one day!

If that's the case, then it's overdue for her three latest surviving silents to get a release on disc (assuming they can be restored). She should be known to audiences for more than being Lloyd's co-star from the mid-teen shorts.

If you put it in context of the time it makes sense but in hindsight it seems a bit odd.

Robert Woolsey was an established theatrical actor having worked a lot in San Francisco and later on Broadway, notably now, for appearing with W. C. Fields in Poppy. He was not a name over the title star.

Bert Wheeler had been one of Ziegfeld's Follies stars since at least 1923 and a well established vaudeville performer by the time Rio Rita came along. it would make sense the Ziegfeld would have highlighted Bert's participation in the film.

And remember Wheeler and Woolsey were not a team when cast in the show. They became a team as a result of their success in the stage version and subsequently the film. They were the only actors to recreate their stage roles.

Corrections to this scenario welcome...

I got Ducks and Drakes (1921) out of Library of Congress back in 2016 (score by David Drazin) because it's not a Paramount film. It was produced and released by Realart Pictures. It has aired on TCM once to my knowledge. I believe this is still available via Grapevine Video.

When I tried for Sick Abed the old bugaboo "donor restriction" (Paramount) reared its ugly head.

Assuming you've tried contacting "the suits" and asking them to lift those onerous restrictions to facilitate a Kickstarter -- what's been their response?

"Go away kid, ya bother me!"

"Show me da money!!!"

or... just

SILENCE

(cue the chirping crickets)

Andrea K. was always very nice in the couple phone calls I had with her regarding Sick Abed and The Witching Hour. The Paramount Collection was donated to LOC many decades ago (1970s?) and the donor restriction dates from that point. Legal resources would be required to alter the terms of the donation. Paramount was unwilling to foot the bill for these legal actions for films they had no interest in.

Now I must say that Andrea DID approve the release of the Marie Doro films Castles for Two and Lost and Won that Joe Harvat and I produced in 2020 but we've never heard another peep from her (yes we sent her the finished DVD).

I tried for an OK for The Bedroom Window (1925) in April and got no response at all.

Did you actually get a dollar figure for what those fearsome legal resources would cost?

The complete lack of response to your latest query could suggest that this Paramount staffer is no longer in a position of authority to grant (or not grant) permission for the LOC to furnish you with source material -- and in any case, the whole process of approval-or-refusal sounds rather capricious.

Nevertheless, we do know that Kino Lorber has had recent success in freeing up some donor-restricted Paramount silents for disc distribution, so why not contact Kino and see if they will share with you the "magic formula" for untying this Gordian Knot.

Kino has acknowledged that the door, briefly opened, is now closed. I suspect a personnel change.

Yes kinda sorta. Apparently it was also a stand-alone company. I assumed it was a Paramount film but checked it yesterday and there's no mention of or logo anywhere.

It was a fully owned by Paramount and Library of Congress got those films from them.
