This year the festival seems to have a less ambitious programme but a greater regional focus. My lack of a car is likely to prevent me from heading any further than the inner Sydney showings, but I'm looking forward to Borzage's `Lucky Star' and the Russian film `Bed and Sofa' in particular.

Still an interesting line up. I caught The Peach Girl here in SF, what 2 years back, and enjoyed it.
Have fun and please post as you can!

I will do. I'm looking forward to the Peach Girl also. Ruan Lingyu has been incredible in everything I've seen her in.

Golden era of Silence: Australian Silent Film Festival
Local News
30 Jul 11 @ 02:28pm by LOUISA BATHGATE
IN today’s world of action-packed, immersive 3D films featuring only the most up-to-date special effects, silent films from the late 1920s might seem outdated, perhaps irrelevant. The organisers of Australian Silent Film Festival hope to change those preconceptions.
The films featured in the festival have been restored and digitally remastered, and are accompanied by llive music.
David Shepard, from the Film Preservation Associates in the USA, introduces the program by explaining that “silent films are not just sound films without the talking”. They are film art, art that reaches us “through the poetry of motion, of metaphor, of meaning expressed through visual subtlety and magnification of detail.”
Festival organiser Ronnie Farrah is passionate about the timelessness of silent films, saying the drawcard of the festival is simply quality films and quality music.
The program runs at Croydon (Sept 10), Epping (Sept 17), and 220 Pitt St (Sept 24.)
MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT
Greg Smith embraces a diverse range of styles, including chamber music, sacred music and music theatre.
Sharolyn Kimmorley is one of Australia’s most highly regarded coaches and accompanists, and has worked with Joan Sutherland, Richard Bonynge, Neil Rosenshein and Bryn Terfel to name just a few.
Mauro Colombis is a classically trained Italian musician, specialising in improvisation

Re: Australia's Silent Film Festival 2011
Regarding the showing of 'Phantom of the Opera', the following has been announced:
Breaking News: The world exclusive preview of the first Blu-Ray edition of the restored and iconic Lon Chaney 1925 film, the Phantom of the Opera, with original Technicolor and hand coloured sequences, shall take place at the grand Astor theatre, in Melbourne, on Saturday October 22 at 7pm.
I'm not sure whether 'preview' does or does not means that the entire new version is being seen, or that the new version has not yet been completed ... either way, I'm very envious of the Melbournites who will get to find out!
